What is Laminated Glass?
Laminated Glass is made from two sheets of glass bound together with a plastic or resin interlayer. The standard and minimum interlayer is 0.38mm thick, however other interlayers are also available in 0.76, 1.14 or 1.52mm.
It has a similar impact strength resistance to annealed float glass. However, it does not shatter and spread when broken, instead remains intact on its plastic or resin interlayer, protecting people from injury. This is why many building codes worldwide require this type of safety glass.
Laminate glass is considered an A grade safety glass in accordance with AS/NZ 2208 and other international standards.
In residential and commercial projects, it provides many benefits, safety, security, sound reduction, solar energy control and UV control (99%UV blocked).
Laminated Glass Types
We supply the following types:
1. Toughened (Tempered)
Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than standard annealed glass, offering the highest impact resistance. Toughened laminated glass does not shatter and spread when broken, instead it remains intact on its plastic or resin interlayer.
Therefore, the main benefits of Laminated Toughened Glass are its strength and performance under impact, preventing serious injury.
2. Tinted
Tinted laminated glass is made from two sheets of tinted glass bound together with a plastic or resin interlayer. The most common tints include grey, bronze and green.
This type of glass absorbs solar energy, therefore reducing and helping control the amount of heat, visible light and ultraviolet rays that are transmitted through your windows and glass applications (79%-94% UV blocked).
3. White (Opal)
White laminated glass is commonly known as translucent or opalescent laminated glass. It is entirely opaque, so you are not able to see through either side, however it does allow light to transfer through the glass.
An opaque interlayer provides white laminated glass with the appearance of sandblasted or etched glass, giving you a frosted laminated glass look.
4. Acoustic
Acoustic Laminated Glass is made from two sheets of glass permanently bonded together with one or more acoustic interlayer. The acoustic interlayer reduces noise by absorbing the sound energy and preventing the sound vibrations from travelling through the glass.
Laminated Safety Glass
Safety glass refers to glass that is designed to minimise the risk of injury if it breaks. Safety Glass is processed glass that is manufactured to satisfy the requirements of AS/NZS 2208 standard for safety glazing.
These standards ensure that the glass meets stringent safety requirements for strength and performance under impact.
Laminated Glass is rated as Grade A safety glass.
Safety glass is commonly used in locations where the risk of human impact is high, such as in doors, windows, shower screens, and balustrades.
Laminate Glass Thicknesses
Stake Glass has an in-house laminating facility in Christchurch, where we manufacture custom laminated glass. We use the following types of interlayers:
1. EVA interlayer - more commonly used for general laminated glass applications, offering good performance and durability for indoor and some outdoor uses.
2. SENTRY interlayer - preferred for high-performance, high-security, and structural applications due to its superior strength, durability, and resistance to environmental factors.
